“At a Public Ordination ceremony held at 8pm on Sunday 22 May at Shambhala Retreat Centre, Golden Bay, New Zealand, Clare Feeney was ordained into the Triratna Buddhist Order as Muditanandi, a Sanskrit name meaning ‘She who delights in sympathetic joy’.  Her private preceptor was Varadevi and her public preceptor was Megha.

Ordination at the London Buddhist Centre

Parami writes from Triratna's London Buddhist Cetnre to say - "In the presence of many friends, at the London Buddhist Centre on Friday 15th April, Helen Jeffries had her Public Ordination.

"She becomes Samavahita (long final 'a'), a Pali name meaning 'She whose attention is great'. Her private preceptor was Dhammadinna and her public preceptor was Parami".

Samavahita has asked that there be no cards or gifts following her ordination, she has set up a page www.charitygiving.co.uk/helen-samavahita for donations/messages, with Bodywise (Triratna's alternative health centre near the London Buddhist Centre) as the beneficiary.

Meanwhile, both the men's and the women's long ordination retreats have begun at Guhyaloka and Akashavana respectively, Triratna's two retreat centres in the mountains of Spain.  We look forwards to welcoming them back in June or July.

One-Year Ordination Training Course offered at Padmaloka

Aryabandhu writes from Triratna's Padmaloka Buddhist Retreat Centre with breaking news of a great opportunity for any men seeking ordination into the Triratna Buddhist Order.  He says "We are planning to run a one year intensive ordination training course for men from January to December 2012.  There aren’t many places in our movement these days where you can fully immerse yourself in a spiritual life and train for ordination. So we’re creating one here at Padmaloka.

"Come and live at Padmaloka for a year and take part in all the Going for Refuge retreats, and most of our other retreats - we will finalise the programme later in the year. There will also be time for your own study and travel and a bit of time to work with the community.

"We don’t guarantee that you get ordained at the end of it … but we do hope it can significantly speed up the process! The Ordination team is enthusiastic about this initiative.

"We think it will cost about £5000, but as an introductory offer we are asking for £3000, which includes board, lodging and all retreats. You may even be able to reduce this by up to 50%. Windhorse:Evolution might be able to offer £1000 off, if you work there for 3 or 4 months this autumn, and also Karuna might be able to offer £500, if you do a six-week fundraising appeal with them, half way through the course in June 2012.”

Names for 15 women recently ordained in India

We’re finally able to bring Triratna News readers the names of the following 15 women ordained at Bordharan Retreat Centre, central India on Sunday 9 January 2011. Their ordinations brought the number of Indian women ordained into the Triratna Buddhist Order over the 100 mark for the first time - to a total of 103!

Nirmala Jadhav from south-west Nagpur becomes Amalachandra – She who has the moon of purity and peace.

Sunita Patil from south-west Nagpur becomes Jayachandra - She who has the moon of victory.

Tarabai Lohkar from Hinganghat (first Dhammacharini from there) becomes Sanghasakhi - She who is the friend of the Sangha.

Chaya Tamgadge from Yavatmal becomes Samyaka - She who is trying to be perfect (one of the first two Dhammacharinis from here).

Nanda Meshram from Wardha becomes Dipamala - She who has a line of lamps - her light is very powerful.

Jaya Mhatre from Yavatmal becomes Jayakirti - She who has a famous victory (one of the first two Dhammacharinis from here).

Jnanasuri was the Private Preceptor for all the above.

Vaishali Wasnik from north Nagpur becomes Vidyadharini – She who keeps in mind the understanding of the wisdom of the Buddhadhamma.

15 women ordained in India, women's Order in India now over 100

Today's story on Triratna News comes also from India , this time from Satyajyoti and Manjusiha. They are two fundraisers for the India Dhamma Trust which is a new UK charity dedicated to raising awareness of - and funds for - Triratna’s ordination process for men and women in India. They are on their first visit to India at the moment, and write from Nagpur to say:

"On Sunday we were privileged to go to the Public Ordination of 15 new Dhammacharinis at Triratna’s Bor Dharan Retreat Centre near Nagpur. Many hundreds of people attended (maybe over 700?) and witnessed the new Dhammacharinis making their commitments publicly. It was a particularly historic event as it took the number of women order members in India to over 100!

“Karunamaya (shown left) was the Public Preceptor conducting the ceremony and talked about how the Triratna Buddhist Community is a truly international sangha. She was delighted that there was also a Public Ordination in Finland on the same day and she asked us all to shout our Sadhus so loudly that they could be heard in Finland and also by Sangharakshita. We did!

“ The atmosphere was joyful with many family members, friends and sangha packed into the stupa to celebrate the ordinations, followed by multiple shared picnic lunches outside.

“Many of the women have faced many struggles on their way to ordination, so it was a great pleasure to see them looking so radiant and delighted, and also to see the pride and respect of their friends and families. Many people had travelled long distances on over-night trains to be at the Public Ordinations and we had a very tangible feeling of the strength and commitment of the Indian Sangha."

Some 1,500 men and women in India have asked for Ordination. Helping so many towards ordination is a massive task, as each person prepares individually, the process typically taking several years. The Indian men’s and women’s ordination teams therefore include over a dozen people - hence the need for the India Dhamma Trust. Forthcoming Ordination in Finland

Triratna News is delighted to announce that the first ordination of 2011 will be Marita Salminen, from Finland.  She  will be privately ordained by Bodhishri on Thursday 6th January at 5pm, in the context of a puja during a retreat at Abhayaloka Retreat Centre in Finland.

Her public ordination ceremony will be conducted by Ratnadharini at the Helsinki Buddhist Centre on Sunday 9th January at 6pm - all are welcome.

Parami writes from Spain with news of Prajnasiddhi's recent ordination.  She says -

On the 19th August Anna Robinson had her public ordination at Triratna's London Buddhist Centre. Her private preceptor was Dhammadassin and the public preceptor was Mallika. During the ceremony Anna became Tareshvari meaning "capable of crossing over" (bridge builder)

Her name is Sanskrit, and should be written with a macron [horizontal bar] over the first "a", an uptick over the "s" and a macron over the "i".

Ordination in San Francisco

On Monday, July 19, at sunrise, Sarah Brown was privately ordained by Viveka and given the name Pasadini, meaning "She possessed of crystalline brightness". Her ordination took place during the North American Sangha's first month-long meditation retreat, at Jikoji retreat center near San Francisco.

Pasadini was welcomed into the Order in the public ordination ceremony conducted by Parami at Triratna's San Francisco Buddhist Center on Sunday afternoon, July 25, surrounded by sangha, friends and family.
